Bangladesh and the Maldives are united in their commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action and protecting the planet for future generations, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman said yesterday (26 July), highlighting the two countries’ large-scale tree planting initiatives.
He made the remarks after planting a Christina tree at Lonuziyaarai Park in Malé under the Maldives’ “Five Million Trees Project”, launched by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The foreign minister praised President Muizzu’s initiative to expand the country’s green cover and said Bangladesh is implementing a programme to plant 25 crore trees over the next five years.
He said the two countries’ tree planting initiatives reflect their shared commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action and safeguarding the planet for future generations.
Earlier in the day, Khalilur attended the 61st Independence Day Parade of the Republic of Maldives at Republic Square in Malé.
The parade featured a ceremonial march-past and displays by various branches of the Maldives National Defence Force, showcasing the country’s discipline, heritage and national pride on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of its independence.
Khalilur is visiting the Maldives at the invitation of the Maldivian government to participate in celebrations marking the country’s 61st Independence Day as its special guest.
