Bangladesh and the International Labour Organization (ILO) today (19 July) discussed labour sector reforms, efforts to eliminate child labour, migrant workers’ rights and safe migration during a meeting in Dhaka.
ILO Director General Gilbert F Houngbo paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir at a hotel in the capital.
At the outset of the meeting, Houngbo congratulated Bangladesh on its election as the president of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and expressed hope that cooperation between Bangladesh and the ILO would be further strengthened during the country’s presidency.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions focused on recent progress in Bangladesh’s labour sector, the situation of child labour, labour law and institutional reforms, ensuring the rights and welfare of migrant workers, and promoting safe and regular migration.
During the meeting, Humayun Kabir sought the ILO’s continued support in protecting the rights, safety and welfare of Bangladeshi migrant workers.
He also requested continued technical assistance to strengthen institutional capacity, improve skills development and implement international labour standards in the country’s labour sector.
The ILO chief praised the recent progress made in Bangladesh’s labour sector and the government’s initiatives to reduce child labour.
He assured Bangladesh of the ILO’s continued cooperation in advancing labour reforms and improving workers’ rights in the future.
