Bangladesh is awaiting a decision from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government to bring back former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who was arrested in Dubai, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said.
Speaking to reporters after a discussion and ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka today (26 June), the minister said Bangladesh has already sent all the necessary documents to the UAE authorities, reports Prothom Alo.
“The Bangladesh government has already sent all the required documents. We have not yet received any response from the UAE government. We hope to hear from them soon,” he said.
Referring to Benazir’s latest status, the minister said, “As far as we know, he is with the federal police and remains in their custody. I do not have any other information.”
Responding to a question on continued push-ins along the Bangladesh-India border, Salahuddin said the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) remains on alert, adding that no one has been allowed to enter Bangladesh by force.
He said border-related matters should be handled through established international and diplomatic processes.
If any Bangladeshi citizen staying in India illegally is identified, they should be returned through the existing diplomatic mechanism after verification, he added.
The minister said Bangladesh would accept its citizens after legal verification if India provides a list of Bangladeshi nationals.
However, sending people across the border without verifying their nationality is unacceptable and could negatively affect bilateral relations, he remarked.
On bringing back the suspects arrested in India over the murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, the minister said the necessary documents, including arrest warrants, have been sent to the Indian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the extradition treaty.
He said the government is hopeful they can be brought back for the sake of the investigation.
