An attempted murder case has been filed against 50 leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP), including Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary and Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam, in Habiganj.
Md Iqbal Hossain Rukun, joint general secretary of Habiganj Chhatra Dal, filed the case last night (30 July) at Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station.
Ten people were named in the case, while another 40 were listed as unidentified accused.
Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Haque said the police will investigate the allegations and take legal action, adding that no arrests have been made yet in the case.
According to the case files, clashes broke out in several phases between NCP and Chhatra Dal activists in front of the Court Mosque area in Habiganj municipality between 5pm and 8pm on Tuesday (28 July).
The plaintiff alleged that Chhatra Dal activists had gathered there to visit the family of July Uprising martyr Ripon Shil and attend a memorial programme.
Then, a group of 40 to 50 people, including Patwary, Sarjis, Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, and Mahbubul Bari Chowdhury, attacked them with locally made weapons, he added.
In addition, several Chhatra Dal leaders, including Mahfuz Chowdhury and Mozakkir Hossain Emon, were injured after being struck with iron rods, machetes, sickles, and bricks, according to the case documents.
The case also alleged that several mobile phones, including iPhones and a Samsung Galaxy, along with Tk50,000 in cash, were snatched during the incident.
The other named accused are Habiganj Jatiya Chhatra Shakti Convener Nur Alam Chowdhury, Fakhrul Zakir, A Hai Kamal, Ruham Gazi, Mahbubul Bari Chowdhury Mubin, Nahid Uddin Tarek, Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal and Wadud Mahmud Chowdhury.
The case stems from the same incident over which the NCP had earlier filed a separate case against Chhatra Dal.
In that case, 11 people, including the Chhatra Dal president, were named as accused, while another 100 were listed as unidentified.
The NCP alleged that at least 15 of its leaders and activists, including Sarjis, were injured in the attack while returning to the Circuit House after a procession and street rally.
It also claimed that one of its activists lost sight in one eye.
