The Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has arrested Mohammad Rafiq, head of the armed group Islami Mahaz, who is wanted in several cases, including murder.
The arrest was made during a raid in Block C-5 of Balukhali Rohingya Camp 9 in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya upazila early today (24 October), said Superintendent of Police Riaz Uddin Ahmed, acting commander of APBn-8.
Rafiq is the son of Mohammad Ayub and a resident of the same area of the camp.
Riaz said, “APBn officers received information that several members of the armed group Islami Mahaz gathered in Block C-5 of Balukhali Camp 9. A team subsequently cordoned off a suspected house. Three to four people attempted to flee when officers surrounded the building.”
Police chased the suspects and managed to arrest Rafiq, the group’s leader, while the others escaped, he added.
According to the police officer, Rafiq faces several cases involving allegations of murder and other offences, as well as accusations of creating instability in Rohingya camps.
He had been absconding for a long time in connection with the cases.
Rafiq has been turned over to Ukhiya Police Station for further legal action, Riaz said.
