AL’s return buzz in December exists only on social media, in India: Sarjis

Talk of the Awami League’s return in December is confined to social media and India, with no prospect of the party returning to Bangladesh, National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam has said.

“In an independent and sovereign country, perpetrators of genocide, killers and other convicted criminals cannot return, including those sentenced to death,” he told reporters after the party’s organisational meeting at the Brahmanbaria District Shilpakala Academy auditorium today (29 August).

On the energy crisis, Sarjis said if the finance and energy ministers acknowledged that the electricity and gas situation had gone out of control, the ministers responsible for the sectors should resign.

“Blaming just one minister will serve no purpose. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman cannot evade responsibility. If he sees that a minister is unable to properly run his ministry, he must remove that minister.

“If he instead keeps him in office and watches the failure unfold, he cannot evade responsibility,” he added.

Sarjis also criticised the law-and-order situation, urging the home minister to pay greater attention to his ministry.

“The home minister is currently acting as the prime minister’s ‘proxy’. But in doing so, he is failing to give sufficient attention to the home ministry, one of the state’s key ministries. We urge him to focus on his ministry,” he said.
