Leaders of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (Jucsu) have threatened to blockade the Dhaka-Aricha Highway if there is any negligence in arresting the accused in the attempted rape of a female student on campus.
The announcement came at a press conference held in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence this afternoon (16 May), where Jucsu leaders also placed a five-point demand seeking a safe campus.
Their demands include arresting the accused through intervention at the highest levels of the state, preventing any group from exploiting the incident politically, and conducting an impartial investigation against the registrar, security department and proctoral body for alleged administrative negligence in the investigation and identification of CCTV footage.
Jucsu leaders alleged that a lack of coordination and various complications in analysing CCTV footage and conducting the investigation have hampered a proper probe.
They also claimed that AI-generated manipulated images circulating on social media have created confusion in identifying the actual accused.
Jucsu General Secretary Md Majharul Islam said the perpetrator must be brought under the law quickly, and any negligence by any part of the administration must be identified through an impartial investigation and addressed.
He also warned that no one should destabilise the situation or divert attention from the core demands.
Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said law enforcement agencies are working to arrest the accused, and the university administration is maintaining constant communication.
He added that a committee will be formed to investigate the spread of AI-generated images, and action will be taken against those found responsible.
On the night of 12 May, a female student was allegedly assaulted and subjected to an attempted rape on the JU campus.
The incident reportedly took place around 11:30pm on the road in front of the old Fazilatunnesa Hall near the Al-Beruni Hall extension area.
The university administration later filed a case over attempted rape and attempted murder in connection with the incident.
