Visitors at the shrine of Sultanul Awliya Hazrat Shah Ali Baghdadi (R) in Mirpur were allegedly attacked by local Jamaat activists in the early hours today (15 May).
The incident took place around 1am beside a field inside the shrine premises, where an Urs was being held.
According to police and eyewitnesses, people from different parts of the country had gathered for the event. Around 1am, 70 to 80 local Jamaat activists reportedly entered the shrine carrying sticks.
They allegedly beat several people with sticks and forced them to leave the shrine over accusations of drug use.
Several videos of the incident later circulated on social media, drawing widespread criticism. The videos show people beating devotees and visitors at the shrine with sticks.
Confirming the incident, Darussalam Zone Assistant Commissioner of DMP Emdad Hossain told The Business Standard that some outsider men and women were reportedly using drugs beside the Rawza at night. He said locals removed them from the area.
He added that sticks were seen in the hands of those involved in the videos, but the allegations of assault were not confirmed.
When asked about the involvement of Jamaat activists, he said they were locals and that one or two of them might be linked to Jamaat.
DMP Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner Mostak Sarkar said legal action would be taken if any complaint is filed.
