Four people were killed and at least nine others were injured in a head-on collision between two buses in the Chunati area of Lohagara upazila in Chattogram today (9 May).
The accident took place at around 11:15am near Four Seasons Restaurant on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway.
One of the deceased was Rehena Begum, 60, wife of Badiul Alam and a resident of the Pachuria area in Patiya upazila. The identities of the other three victims could not be confirmed immediately.
Lohagara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abdullah said treatment of the injured is ongoing and several remain in critical condition.
Police and local sources said multiple passengers were critically injured after the two buses collided head-on while travelling from opposite directions. Several people later died during rescue operations and on the way to the hospital.
Lohagara Fire Station officer Firoz Khan said, “After receiving information about the accident, we recovered one body from the scene. We also rescued six critically injured passengers and admitted them to hospital.”
He added that several other injured passengers were admitted to local hospitals by their relatives.
The injured were first taken to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex before critically injured patients were referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Police and fire service personnel conducted rescue operations at the scene before traffic movement on the highway returned to normal.
