Police have arrested a Rohingya youth from a refugee camp in Teknaf on allegations of involvement with Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a banned militant organisation.
The detainee, identified as Mohammad Ullah, 19, was reportedly active on social media under the alias “Ayatullah BD Ahammed”. Police said they found evidence of his participation in a TTP-linked WhatsApp group.
Confirming the matter, Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-In-Charge Md Saiful Islam, said, “The arrest was made during a raid at Camp 24 in the Jadimora area of Teknaf last night. He was later produced before a Cox’s Bazar court this morning [5 May].”
“Initial findings suggest his involvement with TTP. We are verifying the data recovered from his mobile phone,” the OC added.
Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ohidur Rahman said, “Mohammad Ullah has been shown arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The suspect was identified with assistance from the Special Branch using technological intelligence.”
According to police, Mohammad Ullah was also connected to another WhatsApp group named “Haqiqat News”, operated by two Pakistan-based militant figures.
Investigators further suspect that he may have links with the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa), a rebel group from Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
Mohammad Ullah is the son of Abdul Karim, a resident of the same refugee camp.
