Police recovered the body of a youth from inside his home and the body of his father from a nearby railway line in the Uttar Bonomala area of Tongi in Gazipur city today (26 April).
The deceased were identified as Sohel Rana, 48, and his son Sakibur Rahman Shoaib,17, a first-year student of Uttara Anwara Model Degree College in Dhaka.
Police have taken the elder son, Saifur Rahman, 27, into custody for questioning, confirmed Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Mohammad Mohiuddin Ahmed.
Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mehedi Hasan said the case is under investigation, and the cause will be clearer after the autopsy. Legal proceedings are ongoing.
According to locals, Sohel had previously lived in Singapore and Malaysia. His wife died about a year ago, after which he lived in the house with his two sons.
On the night of the incident, all three were in the same house. Neighbours rushed in after hearing screams early in the morning and found the youth’s body inside the room, while the father’s body was found on the nearby railway tracks.
Police officials who visited the scene said the killing appeared planned. The youth’s body had multiple severe injuries. He had wounds on the back of his head, and his right wrist and left ankle were cut. Cloth had been placed in his mouth.
Another source said the elder son was sleeping in an adjacent room after returning from night duty at a private organisation. Police are questioning him due to inconsistencies in his statements and are examining how he remained unharmed.
Police are also investigating whether the father’s death was a suicide or whether the incident was staged.
The bodies have been sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
