The Bangladesh Navy yesterday (24 April) seized 3,000 litres of “illegally hoarded” diesel, and detained one person during a joint drive in Noakhali’s Hatiya upazila.
Navy conducted the operation, with support from police and local administration, at Kalamchar Switch Ghat area under Jahajmara union of the upazila, reads a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) today (25 April).
During the drive, law enforcers recovered the diesel stored in 15 barrels from an area adjacent to a local ice factory.
A trader, Md Mohiuddin, 45, was detained on charges of stockpiling fuel to create an artificial crisis in the market and earn undue profit.
Following the operation, both the seized diesel and the detainee were handed over to Hatiya Police Station for further legal proceedings.
The Bangladesh Navy said it has been conducting regular drives under a “zero tolerance” policy against illegal fuel hoarding and smuggling, particularly in the context of global energy pressures.
