Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has inaugurated the newly built Siddik Bazar Community Centre in the Siddik Bazar area on Alauddin Road, fulfilling a long-standing demand of Old Dhaka residents for a modern social venue with improved facilities.
DSCC Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam inaugurated the facility on Monday morning. State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraq Hossain, MP, was present as special guest.
Speaking at the inauguration, Abdus Salam said arranging social and family events has long been a major challenge for residents of Old Dhaka. “This modern six-storey building will help remove that limitation,” he said.
He said the corporation had not only constructed a building, but had also ensured modern healthcare services, a library and a gymnasium for residents. He urged local people to take proper care of the public asset.
Recalling former mayor Bir Muktijoddha Sadeque Hossain Khoka, who laid the foundation stone of the project, he said Old Dhaka still owes much to “Khoka Bhai” for its development.
Built under DSCC’s own supervision at a cost of Tk38.98 crore, the six-storey facility includes a spacious car parking area. The second, third and fourth floors can accommodate 550 guests each, with a total hosting capacity of 1,650 people.
The fifth floor houses a ward councillor’s office, a modern healthcare centre and a library. An advanced gymnasium has been set up on the sixth floor to promote a healthy lifestyle.
At the inauguration, officials said work was also under way on more large-scale social centres under DSCC. Under the DCNUP project, construction of nine centres has reached 52% completion. In addition, work on 19 centres is ongoing with DSCC’s own funds, while plans are under way to build 30 more centres.
