Aaron Sorkin has revealed that David Fincher was his first choice to direct The Social Reckoning, the follow-up to the 2010 film The Social Network.
Sorkin, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie, eventually took on directing duties himself after Fincher was unable to join the project because of his exclusive deal with Netflix.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Sorkin said, “I was my second-choice to direct it.”
He added, “I would have rather David Fincher directed it – I would rather David Fincher direct everything – but David has an exclusive deal at Netflix, and this was owned by Sony.”
Despite directing films like Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Being the Ricardos, Sorkin confesses he thinks he is still amature when it come to filmmaking.
“There’s a big part of me that feels like I just got into the movie business a few minutes ago, and that there’s so much I don’t know,” he shared.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter also believes that some directing skills cannot be learned through experience alone.
“I’m very worried that the parts of directing that I’m not good at are those parts that you can’t learn.”
After working with notable directors, Rob Reiner and Mike Nichols, Sorkin realized he has “no visual sensibility.”
