Three residents were seriously injured after a lift fell at a government housing complex for officials and employees in Paikpara, Mirpur, this morning (2 October).
The incident occurred around 5:40am at Building No 1 of the housing project.
The injured were identified as former prime minister’s office employee Mostafizur Rahman, 60, Abdur Rahman Nais, 40, and Nais’s eight-year-old son, Mohammad Wasi.
They were rescued and taken to the National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), where a doctor on duty said Nais had fractured both legs.
Residents said the three had entered the lift from the fifth floor after Fajr prayers. Shortly afterwards, the lift fell with a loud noise.
Hearing the sound, the building’s security guard went to the lift and heard people screaming inside. Nearby residents then arrived and rescued them, taking them to the hospital, confirmed Darus Salam Police Station Officer-in-Charge Dulal Hossain.
“Three people were injured after the lift fell. We have learned that they were taken to hospital,” he said.
Residents alleged that the lift had technical problems and was being operated after makeshift repairs. They said they had informed the Public Works Department several times through written complaints, but the authorities had not taken action.
