A Haor Express coach was gutted after it was set on fire at Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka tonight (20 September), shortly before the train was scheduled to depart for Mohanganj, said railway authorities.
The fire broke out at around 9:30pm while the train was waiting at the station. The blaze has since been brought under control.
The authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire. However, they suspect sabotage based on how quickly the fire spread through the coach.
“Initially, we suspect sabotage. The signs indicate that the fire spread through the coach very quickly, suggesting that petrol or gunpowder may have been used,” said ABM Kamruzzaman, manager of Dhaka Division Railway.
He said the railway authorities would form an investigation committee tonight to determine the cause of the fire.
The Haor Express is scheduled to leave Kamalapur for Mohanganj at 10:15pm every day.
