Four people were killed and three others injured in separate lightning strikes in Kushtia, Netrakona and Sunamganj today (17 September).
In Kushtia, two people were killed and three others injured in separate incidents in Sadar and Daulatpur upazilas.
Md Rowshan Ali alias Nushu, of Dahkula village, was among four people seriously injured when lightning struck them while they were working in a field around 2:30pm in the Dahkula Karigarpara-Jotpara area.
They were taken to Kushtia Medical College Hospital, where Rowshan died while undergoing treatment, said hospital Deputy Director Dr Akul Uddin.
Meanwhile, Aroz Ali, 28, of Narayanpur village in Daulatpur, died on the spot after being struck by lightning while working at his homestead in the afternoon.
Dr Touhidul Hasan Tuhin of Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex confirmed the death. The respective police stations also confirmed the incidents.
In Netrakona, Md Shafiqul Mia, 26, was killed by lightning at Satgaon village in Khaliajuri upazila around 10am.
Police said Shafiqul had gone to a nearby haor to graze his ducks when lightning struck him. He died on the spot.
Locals recovered his body and took it home before informing police, said Khaliajuri Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Nasir Uddin.
In Sunamganj, Md Shipu Mia, 35, a boat worker, died after being struck by lightning while working on a sand-laden boat in Matiyan Haor of Tahirpur upazila around 7am.
Shipu had left home early in the morning with a neighbour on a sand-carrying boat bound for Tekerghat. The boat was in the middle of Matiyan Haor when lightning struck him, causing critical injuries. He died on the spot.
Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faruk Ahmed confirmed the death.
