BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has described Jamaat-e-Islami as a “political ally” of the Awami League, alleging that the party is using religion for political gain.
“Jamaat is a political ally of the Awami League. Their politics is barbaric, cruel and aligned with those who destroy democracy,” Rizvi said today (13 September) at a programme in Maskara village of Cumilla’s Chauddagram upazila, where new houses and goats were distributed among five BNP families whose homes were damaged by fires during election-related violence.
Questioning Jamaat’s use of religion in politics, Rizvi said, “How can a party engage in politics in the name of religion and sell tickets to heaven while setting the fire of hell in local communities?”
He alleged that incidents of homes belonging to low-income and working-class people being set on fire were evidence of such politics.
“Islam’s true purpose is to serve humanity and help the helpless and distressed. They do not follow that ideal; they are focused on gaining political advantage,” he said.
Rizvi also alleged that Jamaat had repeatedly deceived people throughout Bangladesh’s political history.
He said BNP’s political history was based on upholding justice and commitments and opposing hypocrisy.
After the speech, Rizvi distributed new houses and goats to five BNP families affected by violence and fires at different times during the election period.
The items were presented as gifts from BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman through the party’s “We Are BNP Family” initiative.
