4 more police officers dismissed over prolonged unauthorised absence

The government has dismissed four police officers, including two former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officials and a former Rangpur superintendent of police, after departmental investigations found them guilty of unauthorised absence and misconduct.

The home ministry’s Discipline-1 Branch issued separate gazettes announcing the dismissals today (2 September). The orders, issued by order of the president, took immediate effect.

The dismissed officers are former DMP Joint Commissioner Sanjit Kumar Roy, former DMP Deputy Commissioner Manas Kumar Poddar, former Rangpur SP Md Shahjahan and Bangladesh Police Academy (Sardah) Additional Superintendent of Police Md Hafiz Al Faruk.

According to the gazette, Sanjit Kumar Roy had been absent from duty without permission since 17 September 2024. He was also accused of gross negligence in performing official duties, disobedience of government orders and violating departmental discipline.

A departmental investigation found him guilty of misconduct and desertion, resulting in his dismissal from service as a major penalty.

Manas Kumar Poddar had been absent from duty without permission since 18 October 2024. A departmental investigation also found him guilty of misconduct and desertion, leading to his dismissal.

Md Shahjahan, former SP of Rangpur, did not return to duty after his leave expired on 16 January 2025.

A departmental case was filed against him over his prolonged unauthorised absence, and he was dismissed after an investigation established the allegations.

Md Hafiz Al Faruk, additional superintendent of police at Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, had been absent from duty without permission since 1 February 2025, according to the gazette.

He was also dismissed after a departmental investigation found the allegations against him proven.

The home ministry said departmental cases and investigations against all four officers were conducted under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018.

The dismissals were made based on recommendations from the Bangladesh Public Service Commission and with the approval of the president, according to the gazettes.
