The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has detained a Bangabhaban official in connection with the alleged hacking of the X (formerly Twitter) account of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman.
The detainee has been identified as Mohammad Sarwar-e-Alam, an assistant programmer at the President’s Office in Bangabhaban.
According to police, Sarwar-e-Alam was detained late last night (3 February) from a government quarter adjacent to the Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium and taken to the DB office for questioning over allegations that Dr Shafiqur Rahman’s device was accessed and used to post controversial content from his verified X account.
Confirming the matter, DMP Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafiqul Islam said Sarwar-e-Alam had been brought in for interrogation. “He has been taken to the DB office for questioning. Further action will be decided after the interrogation,” he said.
DB conducted a raid at the government quarter adjacent to the Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium as part of the investigation into the hacking incident. Law enforcement sources said the operation was aimed at identifying and apprehending those involved in gaining unauthorised access to the Jamaat chief’s social media account.
Police sources said the investigation is ongoing and further developments are expected following the interrogation.
