A tribunal in Sylhet today (6 August) sentenced a man to death for killing a 4-year-old girl, Fahima, after an attempt to rape.
Sylhet Women and Children Repression Tribunal Judge Abu Obaida handed down the punishment.
The convict is Zakir Hossain, 30, son of Tota Mia of Sonatala Paschimpara dhan Rayer Chak area of Sadar upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 5 lakh.
According to the prosecution, Fahima Akter, 4, daughter of Raisul Haque of Sonatala village, went missing on May 6.
Later, she was found dead near a water body on May 8.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy.
After investigation, police arrested Zakir Hossain on May 11, suspecting his involvement in the killing, and he gave a confessional statement before court admitting his guilt under 164.
On May 12, police in a press briefing said Zakir asked Fahima to buy a cigarette for him and took it to his house on May 6.
Later, he tried to violate the girl, and when Fahima fell unconscious, he strangled her to death.
He later kept the body inside a briefcase at his house.
On May 8, he dumped the body beside a water body and managed to flee the scene.
Following interrogation, police later recovered a bed sheet and a briefcase from the house of Zakir.
Police submitted a chargesheet against Zakir and two of this brother.
After examining the records and witnesses, the court acquitted two others because the allegations against them could not be proved.
