The High Court has stayed the appointment of Sabina Siddiqua, wife of Dhaka-19 MP Dewan Mohammod Salahuddin, as president of the governing body of Mofazzal-Momena Chakladar Mohila Degree College in Savar after she was appointed before the expiry of the existing committee’s tenure.
The court passed the order yesterday (3 August) after a preliminary hearing on a writ petition, staying the appointment for three months and issuing a rule.
The High Court bench of Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar passed the order.
Barrister Nur Ul Matin represented the writ petitioner during the hearing and informed the media of the order today.
According to the petitioner’s lawyer, Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan, a Senate member of Jahangirnagar University and a Supreme Court lawyer, was appointed president of the college’s governing body on 24 April 2025 for a two-year term, which was due to expire on 24 April 2027.
However, on 23 July, about eight months before the end of the committee’s tenure, the College Inspector of the National University issued an order appointing Sabina Siddiqua as the new president.
Following the order, Shihab Uddin Khan sent a legal notice to the National University’s vice-chancellor, registrar and college inspector, seeking withdrawal of the appointment within 48 hours.
After receiving no response, he filed the writ petition.
The respondents in the case include the secretaries to the Secondary and Higher Education Division and the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the vice-chancellor and college inspector of the National University, and the principal of Mofazzal-Momena Chakladar Mohila Degree College in Savar.
