The Power Division has rejected allegations of widespread inflated electricity bills as “misleading propaganda”, warning that legal action will be taken against individuals or groups spreading false information without evidence.
In a statement issued today (3 August), the division said there is no reason for confusion over claims of excessive electricity bills, as complaints received from consumers have already been addressed jointly by the ministry and power distribution companies.
It said consumers who believe they have been overcharged should submit relevant documents to the appropriate authorities, assuring that complaints would be investigated and necessary action taken if any irregularities are found.
The division warned that spreading unverified information with the intention of creating public confusion would invite strict legal measures.
The clarification comes amid discussions on social media and complaints from some consumers over unusually high electricity bills in recent weeks.
Power sector officials have previously attributed some billing disputes to issues such as estimated meter readings, delays in updating meter data, billing-cycle adjustments and increased electricity consumption during the summer.
The Power Division urged consumers to use official complaint channels instead of sharing unverified claims, saying authorities remain committed to resolving any genuine billing issues.
