Former railways minister Nurul Islam Sujan has been formally arrested in a case filed over the killing of a man during the July Uprising in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area, with a court fixing tomorrow (20 May) for a hearing on his bail petition.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque granted a police application to show Sujan arrested in the case today (19 May).
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, CID Inspector Md Shamim Hossain, produced the accused before the court and sought permission to show him arrested in the case.
According to the application, preliminary investigation found information suggesting the accused was involved in the planning and commission of the crime.
The application further stated that showing him arrested was necessary for proper investigation and uncovering the details of the case, and that he might later be taken on remand if required for further investigation.
Sub-Inspector Mohin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Department confirmed the development, saying Sujan had been shown arrested as the 13th accused named in the FIR.
The case statement says Md Jahangir was shot and critically injured in the Shanir Akhra area of Jatrabari on 20 July during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
He later died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, the victim’s younger brother, Md Umar Faruq, filed the case with Jatrabari Police Station.
Nurul Islam Sujan was detained by Jatrabari police from Bangladesh Specialised Hospital in Dhaka’s Shyamoli area on 16 September 2024.
The following day, a court granted a three-day remand for him in another case filed with Jatrabari Police Station. He has remained in jail since then.
