Joint forces have seized around 578.6 tonnes of rice from an abandoned warehouse in Chattogram’s Sitakunda, following allegations of illegal stockpiling and repackaging for sale under different brand names.
Meanwhile, one person has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The joint operation was carried out today (13 May) at an abandoned warehouse of Saleh Carpet Mill in the Kadam Rasul Bhatiari area under Sitakunda Police Station.
Confirming the matter, Lieutenant Commander Towhidul Islam, company commander of RAB-7 CPC-3 Chandgaon, said, “The operation was conducted over allegations of illegally hoarding government food grains and marketing them in different packaging.”
He added that legal action against those involved was under way.
According to Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) sources, the operation was carried out based on information from an intelligence agency under the leadership of Executive Magistrate Md Alamgir Hossain.
Officials from the Chattogram District Administration, intelligence agencies, RAB-7 CPC-2 Hathazari Camp and CPC-3 Chandgaon Camp also joined the drive.
Authorities said evidence was found that government rice had been illegally stored and repackaged in the name of an unregistered company.
A man identified as Mohammad Aziz claimed ownership of the warehouse during the raid. He was later arrested by Sitakunda Police Station.
