Police detained 45 members of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League after they staged a flash procession on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Cumilla’s Sadar South upazila today (7 June).
The procession was held around noon between the Poduar Bazar and Suagazi areas, according to witnesses.
Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Cumilla Sadar South Police Station, confirmed the incident, saying legal action against the detainees was underway.
Eyewitnesses said more than 100 activists reportedly took part in the rally, carrying portraits of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and chanting slogans in her support, including “Sheikh Hasina will return, Bangladesh will smile”.
The procession lasted only a few minutes before the participants attempted to leave the area.
According to local residents, activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal chased the processionists and, with assistance from locals, detained 45 of them before handing them over to police.
Three microbuses and two buses allegedly used to transport participants to the rally were also seized.
