4 arrested from Ctg over stabbing of police SI in Mohammadpur

Police today (26 July) arrested four people from Chattogram in connection with the stabbing of a police sub-inspector in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur two days ago.

The arrestees are Sharif Uddin Babu, Nazmul Hasan, Imon and Jewel.

Deputy Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) Md Ibne Mizan confirmed the arrests, saying further details about the operation would be disclosed later.

The victim, Md Osman Gani, a sub-inspector serving in the Immigration Branch of the Special Branch (SB) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, was stabbed around 9:30pm on 23 July on Road 4 of C Block in Kaderabad Housing, Mohammadpur.

Police said the attack was not a mugging but was likely linked to previous enmity.

According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) Abdullah Al Mamun, Osman Gani told investigators that three unidentified individuals had contacted him by phone earlier that day, asking him to come to the gate of his residence to discuss a passport-related matter.

The officer suspects the stabbing was connected to an earlier dispute, police said.

According to eyewitnesses and officials at Mohammadpur Police Station, Osman Gani had been returning home with his wife, Tanzina Sima, and their only child after grocery shopping when an assailant approached him from behind and stabbed him before fleeing.

Despite his injuries, the officer chased the attacker but failed to catch him.

He was first treated at a local clinic before being shifted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors treated extensive injuries to his back that required 43 stitches.
