The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has arrested a youth and seized 1,100 yaba tablets from a grocery shop in the capital’s Korail slum.
The DNC also recovered Tk1.9 lakh in cash, which it said was suspected to be proceeds from drug sales, during a raid at the shop on Tuesday (6 October).
The arrested youth was identified as Md Arif Hossain, 26. He was arrested from his semi-pucca grocery shop, Arif General Store, in the T&T Colony area near Ershad Math.
The DNC said it conducted the raid based on intelligence information about drug dealing from the grocery shop.
According to the narcotics control agency, another alleged drug dealer, Monir Hossain, 44, remains absconding in connection with the case.
Monir has three drug-related cases filed with different police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He allegedly controlled different spots in Korail and sold yaba and heroin.
The DNC also alleged that Monir collected liquor from various warehouses in Dhaka and supplied it to homes, while also being involved in smuggling Indian liquor across the border.
The operation was led by Md Rajiur Rahman, deputy director of the DNC’s Dhaka Metro (North) office.
“We are continuing our operations to implement the government’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs. Based on intelligence information, drug dealers and their associates are being identified and brought under the law,” Rajiur said.
“Operations will be intensified in Korail and other areas of the capital where drug dealing is taking place,” he added.
The DNC said legal proceedings are underway to file a case against Arif and the absconding Monir with Banani Police Station under the Narcotics Control (Amendment) Act, 2026).
