Police have arrested three people for allegedly posing as members of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and extorting money from a flat owner in the capital’s Uttara.
The arrestees are Russel Mahbub alias Masum, 42, Sohel Mirza, 41, and Sajib, 36.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Aktar Hossain confirmed the matter today (3 October).
He said several people went to the 10th floor of a building on Road 3 in Sector 4 of Uttara around 8am yesterday and identified themselves as DGFI members.
They allegedly threatened flat owner Kaiyum Shahriar Jahedi, telling him that a case had been filed against him, and demanded Tk10 lakh to settle the case.
Fearing them, Jahedi paid Tk1.59 lakh. He later became suspicious of their activities and called the national emergency helpline 999 for police assistance.
A team from Uttara East Police Station then went to the scene and found a DGFI identity card in the possession of one of the suspects.
Police became suspicious after examining the card and questioned the suspects, who allegedly admitted to extorting money while posing as DGFI members, the DMP official said.
Police recovered a fake DGFI identity card, a Suzuki Gixxer motorcycle, Tk1.59 lakh in cash, a walkie-talkie and a pair of handcuffs from their possession.
A case has been filed against the three at Uttara East Police Station, and they were arrested in the case and sent to court, police said.
