Two workers were killed and two others sustained injuries after being buried under a mound of earth while working on a Chattogram Wasa sewerage project in the city’s Halishahar area in the early hours of today (23 April).
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Rakib and Tushar, while the injured are Sagar and Ershad. Detailed addresses for the victims were not immediately available.
Nurul Alam Ashiq, in-charge of the Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Police Outpost, confirmed the fatalities.
He stated that the four workers were brought to the hospital at approximately 4:50am, where the attending physician pronounced two of them dead upon arrival.
The two injured workers have been admitted to the casualty ward of CMCH, where they are currently undergoing treatment, he added.
According to police and project staff, the accident occurred near the Phulkolli outlet on Agrabad Access Road during excavation work. The victims were employees of Sinohydro, a Chinese contracting firm tasked with the project.
Nayan, a worker at the Sinohydro project, who assisted in bringing the victims to the hospital, told The Business Standard that a section of the road’s edge collapsed while the workers were digging for the sewerage project.
