A woman and her nephew were allegedly hacked to death following a longstanding dispute over family property in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla this evening (14 September).
The deceased were Khaleda Akter, 70, of Daranipara village, and her nephew Monjurul Alam Titu, 35.
According to locals, Khaleda and her brother Bachchu Mia had been involved in a long-running dispute with their other brother, Abu Mia, over family property.
The dispute escalated into an altercation over the land at around 7pm. At one point, Abu allegedly attacked Khaleda and Titu with a machete, leaving them critically injured.
Locals later took the injured duo to Gouripur Health Complex in Daudkandi upazila, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Dr Naima Haque Rifat, a duty doctor at the health complex, said both victims had multiple injury marks on their bodies and had died before reaching the facility.
Abu fled the scene following the incident, locals said.
Sajedul Haque, officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Police Station, said police went to the hospital after receiving the information and recovered the bodies.
As the incident took place in neighbouring Muradnagar upazila, police from Muradnagar Police Station were handling the matter at the scene, he added.
