A total of 174 Bangladeshi migrants detained in various detention centres in Libya returned home yesterday (23 April).
The move followed joint efforts by the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, reads a press release.
According to the release, they were repatriated safely on a special flight with the support of the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The returnees had been staying in Libya illegally. Most of the returnees had entered Libya with the intention of traveling illegally to Europe via human traffickers. Many had experienced abductions and abuse during their stay.
Upon arrival at Dhaka airport, they were provided with necessary assistance through the airport’s “Probashi Kallyan Desk.”
Officials from the foreign ministry and the IOM welcomed the returnees at the airport and requested them to share their difficult experiences to raise public awareness.
IOM provided each returnee with Tk6,000 as travel allowance, along with food support, primary medical care, and temporary accommodation if needed.
Efforts are ongoing to safely repatriate the remaining Bangladeshi nationals detained in Libya, with close coordination among the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and IOM, the release added.
