At least 10 students of Kushtia’s Islamic University (IU) were injured in two separate clashes over an ongoing football tournament today (21 September), prompting the university to suspend all matches indefinitely.
The first clash broke out in the morning between students of the Accounting and Information Systems Department and the Islamic History and Culture Department over a football match.
The second round of clash took place around 3pm between students of the Biomedical Engineering and Pharmacy departments.
Around 10 students were injured in the two incidents, according to people familiar with the matter.
The clashes raised concerns over security and the overall campus environment surrounding the tournament. Following discussions with the university administration, the sports organising subcommittee decided to suspend all matches until further notice.
Professor Dr Sarfaraz Newaz, convener of the sports organising subcommittee, said disorderly incidents had occurred among students of several departments during football matches.
“Considering the situation, we discussed the matter with the administration and decided to suspend the football tournament indefinitely until further notice,” he said.
He said the heads of all departments had been informed verbally and would receive formal letters tomorrow.
The organisers are awaiting further instructions from the university administration on when and how the inter-department and inter-hall football tournament will resume.
