Nadima Mohammadi Khan, daughter of human rights activist and Supreme Court lawyer Zahirul Hasan (Z I) Khan Panna, was allegedly attacked at her ancestral home in Barishal yesterday (18 July) evening.
The incident took place at the residence of former education minister Hasem Ali Khan on Sadar Road in the city.
Nadima, 39, received treatment at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital following the attack.
Early today, Nadima filed a case with Kotwali Model Police Station, naming her uncle Nazrul Islam Khan and four others as accused.
Police later arrested one of the named accused, Tanjia Chandni, 35, confirmed Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mamunul Islam.
According to the first information report (FIR), one of the accused had previously sold his share of the family’s land but, along with others, had continued to create obstacles whenever her family attempted to visit or use the property.
The complaint further alleges that the accused repeatedly demanded Tk10 lakh from the family and threatened to prevent them from entering Barishal unless the money was paid.
According to the FIR, when the complainant visited the property with witnesses, the accused allegedly surrounded her, renewed the demand for Tk10 lakh and attacked her after she refused to pay.
The complainant alleged that she was beaten with sticks and sustained injuries.
She also claimed that the attackers snatched a 1.12 bhori gold chains valued at approximately Tk3,50,000 in cash before fleeing the scene.
The FIR further states that local people later rescued the complainant and took her to hospital for treatment.
OC Mamunul Islam stated that one accused had been arrested and said police were conducting raids to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Acting Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hannan said the incident was being treated with the utmost importance.
“The Detective Branch is conducting operations to arrest the remaining accused. No one involved in the incident will be spared,” he said.
