A young man was stabbed to death by his cousin following an argument over shouting during a World Cup football match screening in Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet late last night (1 July).
The deceased was identified as Alam Ahmad, 28, son of Warish Ali of Lamargram village under Kholachora Union.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Abdur Razzaq of Zakiganj Police Station said the dispute between the two cousins stemmed from shouting while watching the match, which ultimately led to the fatal attack.
Police arrested the accused, Parvez Ahmad, 32, son of Mostakin Ali of the same village and the victim’s first cousin, shortly after the incident.
According to Zakiganj police sources, an argument broke out between Parvez Ahmad and Alam Ahmad over shouting towards the end of a World Cup football match last night. At one stage of the altercation, Parvez fetched a knife from his house, stabbed Alam, and fled the scene.
Locals rescued the injured Alam and rushed him to Zakiganj Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
Upon receiving the news, police launched an operation and arrested the suspect. The knife believed to have been used in the killing was also recovered.
OC Abdur Razzaq said that the body had been sent to the morgue of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, while legal proceedings were underway.
