A 20-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified assailants at a Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) waste truck garage in Dholpur area of Jatrabari in the capital this evening (27 October).
The incident occurred around 7pm near the Dholpur Wasa gate.
The victim, Maruf, also known as Dukhu Mia, was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 7:45pm.
His cousin, Bithi Akter, told The Business Standard at the hospital that Maruf lived with his mother, Selina Begum, in Dholpur’s City Palli.
The youngest of three brothers and a sister, Maruf worked at an aluminium pot factory in Dayaganj. He married a woman named Mim about a year ago.
Bithi said Maruf returned home from work in the evening and later told his wife he was going out. The family subsequently learned that gunfire had erupted near the Wasa gate and that Maruf had been shot.
She said the family knew of no disputes involving him and could not identify the attackers.
Mohammad Habibur Rahman, inspector and in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Maruf had sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest.
The body has been kept in the hospital morgue for an autopsy, he said, adding that he had informed Jatrabari Police Station about the incident.
