A youth died after allegedly being beaten on suspicion of theft at a school compound in Chattogram’s Polo Ground area yesterday (20 June), with his family claiming he was also subjected to electric shocks before his death.
The deceased, Md Zoynal, 27, was allegedly assaulted at Railway Public High School around 11:30am and later died from his injuries.
Following the incident, his mother filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station, naming four individuals as accused, according to Inspector (Investigation) Md Iqbal Hossain of the station.
Police said Zoynal was caught while allegedly attempting to enter the school building through a window at the rear of the headteacher’s office.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, two school guards apprehended him and assaulted him on suspicion of theft. The incident drew a crowd, and the victim was later found critically injured in front of the school’s main gate.
He died shortly afterwards.
When police arrived to recover the body, family members staged a protest and initially prevented officers from taking it away.
“They killed my brother in cold blood. We will not let the body go until the accused are arrested,” relatives said during the demonstration.
Police later brought the situation under control and sent the body to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
The victim’s mother, Chenowara Begum, alleged that her son had not only been beaten but was also subjected to electric shocks.
She demanded a proper investigation and justice for her son’s death.
Police have detained two school guards – Samir Das and Abdus Samad Azad – on suspicion of involvement in the incident.
Inspector Iqbal said investigators are examining all allegations, including the claim that the victim was given electric shocks.
“The allegation of electric shock can be confirmed only after the autopsy report is received,” he said.
The investigation is ongoing, added the police official.
