World Press Freedom Day is being observed across Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world today (3 May), with the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.”
Every year, this day is observed to evaluate press freedom around the world and to defend the media from attacks on their independence.
The day is also observed to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in discharging their professional duties, according to the website of Unesco.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation adopted at the 26th session of Unesco’s General Conference in 1991.
To mark the day, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting held a procession and organised a discussion in the capital this morning, aiming to highlight the role of media in ensuring transparency and accountability in the digital era.
The programme began with a march at 9am, starting on the Officers’ Club premises and ending at the Tathya Bhaban complex in Dhaka, according to an official handout.
Later, a discussion was held at 9:30am in the conference room of the Department of Films and Publications at the Tathya Bhaban complex on Circuit House Road.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon attended the programme as the chief guest, while State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury was present as the special guest.
