Large crowds forced their way into Dhaka University campus after breaching barricades at Nilkhet and Shahbagh, despite temporary restrictions on visitors and vehicles for the World Cup final.

Large crowds breached police barricades and entered the Dhaka University campus tonight (19 July) late on Sunday night (19 July) to watch the World Cup final on large screens at different spots on campus, despite temporary restrictions imposed by the university administration on the entry of outsiders and vehicles.
According to eyewitnesses, people broke through barricades at the Nilkhet gate and the Shahbagh police station-side entrance before entering the campus to watch the World Cup final.
Several members of the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC), who were assisting with crowd management, said the situation spiralled beyond their control as the number of visitors swelled.
“The number of outsiders became too large to manage. At one stage, they broke through the barricades and entered the campus together,” a BNCC member told Prothom Alo.
Dhaka University acting proctor Israfil Ratan could not be reached for comment.
Earlier, the university administration had announced temporary restrictions on the entry of guests and vehicles to the campus for the World Cup final.
In a notice issued on 18 July, the administration said entry to the campus would remain regulated from Sunday evening until 6am on Monday in the interest of ensuring the safety and security of students and the campus during the final match.
