Viral Mizan arrested for allegedly resisting disconnection of illegal power line

Police today (9 August) arrested Mizanur Rahman — popularly known as “Viral Mizan” for selling beef with rice for Tk100 — after he allegedly obstructed an electricity department team who went to disconnect an illegal power connection at his shop in the capital’s Agargaon.

Mizan was arrested in the Agargaon area this afternoon and later shown arrested in a case filed over obstruction of government work and related offences before being sent to court, said Mohammad Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of the Kafrul Police Station.

He said the electricity department had been conducting regular drives to disconnect illegal connections at various establishments, including roadside shops.

“As part of the drive, an executive magistrate of the electricity department and other officials went to Mizan’s shop in Agargaon to disconnect its illegal power connection. Mizan then confronted them,” the OC said.

He further said Mizan also allegedly assaulted city corporation workers and police personnel who were present at the scene.

Police subsequently detained Mizan and took him to the police station, the OC said.

Mizanur Rahman became known on social media after opening a small roadside rice shop in Agargaon.

His shop drew attention for offering rice, lentils, potatoes and a piece of beef for Tk100.

The shop was named “Nijer Hate Loiya Khaben, 14 Bar Niye Khaben.” It later became popularly known on social media as the “Goriber Buffet.”

Videos of food being served and customers eating at the shop surfaced on social media, earning Mizanur Rahman the nickname “Viral Mizan.”
