US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen visited the traditional floating guava market in Bhimruli, Jhalakathi, this morning (9 August), touring the market by boat and meeting local farmers and traders.
The ambassador arrived at the market around 9am, where Additional Deputy Commissioner Kawsar Hossain welcomed him with flowers.
Christensen later toured the market in a small boat accompanied by officials from the local administration.
During the visit, Christensen observed guava trading and transportation activities and spoke with local farmers and traders.
He also tasted Bhimruli’s guavas and enjoyed the surrounding canals, wetlands and guava orchards.
After spending some time at the market, the ambassador travelled by trawler to Atghar Kuriana in Pirojpur. Officials from the US Embassy and local administration accompanied him.
Speaking to journalists after the visit, Christensen said he thoroughly enjoyed his time at the floating market.
He said the greenery and picturesque surroundings had impressed him and that he was pleased to observe rural life, the daily activities of local people and the natural beauty of Bangladesh.
The visit also drew excitement among local guava growers, traders and residents gathered around the market.
