The Banglabazar sales outlet of publishing house University Press Limited (UPL) was locked following allegations that it was selling the book “The Unfinished Memoirs” (Oshampto Attojiboni), a biography of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The incident took place around 5:30pm yesterday (28 September) and employees were later released following police mediation, according to Prothom Alo.
Matiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sutrapur Police Station, told Prothom Alo that that the two were not taken to the police station but were taken to the Faridabad police outpost and later released from there.
The OC said the book “The Unfinished Memoirs” had not been printed since 2024.
“The employees were released on the condition that the book would no longer be sold. No complaint was filed with the police,” he added.
Police, quoting locals, said two young men went to the outlet around 5:30pm to buy the book and the employees Aminul Islam and Humayun Kabir brought out a copy. The men then objected to its sale, claiming it was banned.
They gathered several other people from the area, pulled down the outlet’s shutter and locked it. The two employees were detained at the same time, police added.
