Two women were killed after being hit by the Chattogram-bound non-stop Suborno Express train at Cumilla Railway Station last evening (18 August).
The accident occurred around 7pm, said Sohrab Hasan, in-charge of the Cumilla Railway Police Outpost.
One of the victims was identified as Jharna Begum, 38, daughter of Md Ruku Mia of Muradnagar. The identity of the other woman could not be established immediately.
Sohrab said police recovered both bodies and identified one of the women using information from her national identity card.
“We have not yet been able to determine why they came here or why they were walking along the railway tracks,” he added.
According to locals, the women were walking along the railway tracks about 20-30 feet ahead of the station’s foot overbridge when the speeding train entered the area.
As the train approached, the two appeared to become disoriented and held each other’s hands, pulling at one another.
At one point, one of the women stepped slightly down from the track, while the other remained in the middle of the railway line.
The train struck the woman who remained on the track. The other died after being hit by the train, according to witnesses.
