Police have detained two suspected muggers after local residents caught and beat them over an alleged mugging attempt in Kushtia’s Mirpur Upazila today (24 October).
The incident occurred around 6am on a road beyond Noymile Kachari. The identities of the two men were not immediately known.
Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shahidul Islam said locals detained the men on suspicion of attempting a mugging and handed them over to highway police, who later transferred them to Mirpur police.
According to local residents, farmers and morning walkers noticed four to five people behaving suspiciously on the road and suspected they were preparing to commit a robbery.
When approached, members of the group allegedly tried to intimidate them by displaying weapons. Residents chased the group, but most of its members managed to flee. Two were caught and beaten by an agitated crowd before patrolling highway police rescued them.
The police officer said a toy pistol and a machete were recovered from the two men. A mugging case has been filed against them, he added.
Local residents said the road near Noymile Kachari had long been considered prone to mugging, particularly at night and in the early morning.
The incident has heightened concerns among people who use the relatively isolated route. Residents called for more frequent police patrols and increased surveillance in crime-prone areas to ensure safer travel.
