The government has dismissed two more police officers who have remained absconding since the July-August mass uprising of 2024.
The officers are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Traffic Division joint commissioner (South) SM Mehedi Hasan and former Gazipur Industrial Police-2 additional superintendent of police Md Rahmat Ullah.
They were dismissed through two separate notifications issued on Monday by Senior Secretary of the Discipline-1 Branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, acting on behalf of the president.
According to one of the notifications, SM Mehedi Hasan had been absent from his workplace since 6 August 2024 while serving as joint commissioner of the DMP Traffic Division. He was later suspended and attached to the office of the deputy inspector general of police (DIG) of the Sylhet Range.
Despite being served notices at different times instructing him to report to duty, he has remained absconding, the notification said. He was therefore dismissed from service as a major disciplinary punishment.
The other notification said Md Rahmat Ullah, while serving as additional superintendent of police at Gazipur Industrial Police-2, took two months’ leave on 9 February 2025, citing illness. However, he did not return to duty afterwards.
He was also dismissed from service as a major disciplinary punishment, according to the notification.
Earlier, on 21 September, the Home Ministry dismissed six senior police officers through six separate notifications on similar grounds.
The dismissed officers were former Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and specialised training centre additional DIG Mohammad Zayedul Alam, former Dhaka district superintendent of police Md Asaduzzaman, former Sirajganj superintendent of police Arifur Rahman Mondal, DMP Secretariat Security Division additional deputy commissioner Rajib Das, Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) superintendent of police Mohammad Sanowar, and former Sylhet Armed Police Battalion additional superintendent of police Palash Ranjan De. All six officers had previously been suspended from service.
