Traffic movement remained normal across Mirpur today (4 November) as police maintained a heightened presence amid the ongoing garment workers’ protests demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000. Meanwhile, BNP and its affiliated organisations held several rallies in the area.
No roads were blocked on the sixth day of the workers’ movement, keeping traffic flowing normally, while police and members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) remained on alert.
The situation was observed during a visit to Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11 and Mirpur-12 between 10am and 12:30pm today.
Traffic was moving normally from Mirpur-10 to Mirpur-12. Police and RAB personnel were seen deployed beneath the Mirpur-10 roundabout and Mirpur-11 Metro Rail station.
An armoured vehicle and a water cannon were stationed at the Mirpur-10 roundabout, while another armoured vehicle was seen beneath the Mirpur-11 station. Around 25–30 police personnel were also positioned in an alley beside the station.
Between 10am and 11:30am, activists of the BNP’s Dhaka North unit, along with members of its affiliated and associate organisations, including Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, held two rallies.
During the processions, they chanted slogans including, “Workers and people are brothers; the Awami League has no protection,” and “Stop chanting Apa, your Apa will never return.”
Earlier, around 9am, police dispersed workers who had attempted to gather in front of factories in the Pallabi industrial area. Workers who tried to take to the streets in the Shialbari area of Rupnagar were also chased away by police.
At around noon, Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Mirpur Division, said workers had made several attempts to take to the streets in Mirpur-11 and Shialbari since morning.
“We persuaded them to leave. Not a single road has been blocked even for a minute since this morning,” he said.
Meanwhile, more than 10,000 police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order amid the garment workers’ protests in Mirpur, said Md Mahidul Islam, acting joint police commissioner (Crime Prevention-North) of the DMP.
He shared the information with journalists at Mirpur-10 around 12:30pm while briefing them on the overall situation.
Mahidul said a large number of police personnel had been deployed across different parts of Mirpur, including Mirpur-1, areas of Pallabi, Rupnagar, Mirpur-12 and Kafrul Road, as well as other key locations.
He said legal action was being taken against those attempting to destabilise the country, cause public suffering, block roads, vandalise vehicles and damage state property in the name of the workers’ movement.
Many people involved in such activities have already been arrested and cases filed against them, he added. Those against whom evidence is found during investigations will also be brought to justice, with strict legal action taken against offenders.
Describing the situation in Mirpur, Mahidul said workers had been unable to take to the streets on Wednesday and that conditions remained normal.
Many garment workers have returned to work, and factory operations have resumed, he added.
