Leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal and Swechchhasebak Dal, along with locals, dispersed a torch procession allegedly organised under the banner of the banned Awami League in Faridpur last night (14 June).
According to local sources, supporters of the Awami League held the procession from the cattle market area in Tepakhola of Faridpur town at around 8:45pm.
The procession was reportedly heading towards the Suman Sweets area when residents, along with activists of Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal, volunteer and student wings of the ruling BNP, chased the participants, forcing them to flee.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mahmudul Hasan said, “We went to the spot after receiving information, but found no one there.
“However, police operations are underway to identify and detain those involved.”
Faridpur Swechchhasebak Dal Member Secretary Shahariar Shithil said, “Last night, activists of the banned organisation Awami League held a torch procession. Our activists became aware of it and foiled the procession.”
“I thank the activists of Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal for resisting the arsonist activities of the banned Awami League. I would also like to extend special thanks to Habib, Zidan Hazra, Md Tarun, Siam and the conscious residents of the Tepakhola area,” he said.
“Awami criminals will not be allowed any place on the soil of Faridpur.”
