A teenage boy died after a septic tank exploded beneath a jewellery shop at Tongi Bazar in Gazipur city last night (26 May).
The incident took place around 11pm in the Saleha Market area of Tongi Bazar.
The deceased was identified as Rudra Dutta, 15, son of Gautam Dutta, owner of Rudra Jewellery Works at the market.
Confirming the incident, Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan said police are investigating the cause of the incident and other related matters.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the jewellery shop on the ground floor of the Saleha Market building had been constructed over a septic tank. The tank suddenly exploded with a loud sound last night, and fire quickly spread through the shop.
Rudra Dutta, who was inside the shop at the time, sustained severe burn injuries.
Locals rushed to the scene after the explosion and rescued him. He was first taken to Tongi Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to a hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment, where he later died while undergoing treatment.
