Sundar Pichai Discusses Google’s Position in the A.I. Race
At this year’s Google I/O developer conference, Kevin Roose and Casey Newton, hosts of the “Hard Fork” podcast, sat down with Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google, and talked about where he feels it is succeeding in the A.I. race, and where he thinks the company can do better.

– So the last time we had you on the show was in 2023. Bard — R.I.P. — had just come out. And, I think at the time, the perception was that Google was catching up in A.I. How are you feeling about your position in the race these days? – I think there are a few places in the world where — which are driving the frontier of the technology. I think we are, we are right there. I think we are finding success across various segments. Consumers, enterprises, developers globally. I think our models are at the frontier in some areas. You know, and there are areas where we are behind the frontier. And so it’s a combination. You know, overall capabilities, including text, multimodality, voice or audio. Reasoning in general, overall intelligence, I think we are very capable. When it comes to agentic coding with tool use and instruction following long-horizon tasks, I think we are a bit behind at this moment, but we are hard at work.
