A speech-impaired woman was allegedly gang-raped by three youths while returning home from a religious program, called kirtan, in Tazumuddin upazila of Bhola.
The incident took place last night (22 February). The rape survivor is currently undergoing treatment at Bhola Sadar Hospital in critical condition.
According to local sources, the woman had gone to attend a kirtan at a temple in Golakpur village. At around 9pm, she boarded a battery-run autorickshaw to return home.
The autorickshaw was also occupied by the driver and two other youths. When the vehicle reached the Dhopabari area, the trio dragged the woman into a nearby garden, tied her mouth, and took turns raping her, locals said, adding that she was also physically assaulted.
Locals found her lying in a blood-soaked condition in a garden early today after the attackers had fled the scene. She was initially rushed to the Tazumuddin Upazila Health Complex.
Dr Samsul Islam, residential medical officer (RMO) of the health complex, said, “The woman was in a very critical state when she was brought in. She was bleeding excessively and had multiple injury marks on her body. We provided primary care and referred her to Bhola Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.”
Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tazumuddin Police Station, said, “A case will be filed as soon as the victim’s physical condition stabilises. We are conducting raids to apprehend the accused.”
